Acclimatize Before High-Altitude Day Trips
Cusco is located at 3,399 meters above sea level (11,152 feet), so it is recommended that you spend at least one or two days in the city before going on high-altitude excursions such as Rainbow Mountain (the Mountain of Seven Colors) or Humantay Lake. Many visitors find the Humantay hike strenuous because of the elevation of over 4,000 meters. Proper acclimatization will let you enjoy the day more fully and reduce the symptoms of altitude sickness (soroche). How to Choose a Day Trip from Cusco
Choose by what you want to see first, then check it against your fitness and how many days you have been at altitude. A glacier lake and a short, steep hike points to the Humantay Lake tour. Bands of colored rock and the highest walk of the lot point to Rainbow Mountain. Inca terraces, salt pans, a weaving village and almost no hiking point to the VIP Sacred Valley tour.
Then think about order. The Sacred Valley sits lower than Cusco and asks little of your legs, so it works well early in your stay. Humantay Lake and Rainbow Mountain are best left until you have spent one or two days in Cusco. If you plan to do both high trips, put the easier one first: Humantay is shorter, and it shows you how your body handles about 4,200 m before you try 5,200 m.
Finally, look at the time of day. The high-mountain trips leave Cusco before dawn and get back in the evening, so avoid booking them on your arrival day or the evening before an early flight.

Who Each Day Trip Suits
- Humantay Lake: travelers in reasonable shape who want a real mountain hike that fits into one day. The climb is about 1 hour 20 minutes, and it doubles as a useful acclimatization test before a trek.
- Rainbow Mountain: travelers who are well acclimatized and want the highest point they can reach in a day trip from Cusco, about 5,200 m. It is the hardest of the three; read our Rainbow Mountain guide before you decide.
- VIP Sacred Valley: families, travelers on their first days in Cusco, and anyone who prefers history and villages to hiking: Chinchero, Moray, the Maras salt mines, a buffet lunch in Urubamba and Ollantaytambo.

Best Season for Day Trips
Day trips run all year. Roughly May to September is the driest stretch, with the best chance of clear skies over the Humantay glacier and the colors of Rainbow Mountain, but early mornings at altitude are cold, so bring warm layers. From November to March, rain and cloud are more likely, trails get muddy and views can come and go within an hour. The Sacred Valley involves little hiking, so a wet day matters less there, which makes it a good choice for a rainy-season date.
Booking Tips for Cusco Day Trips
- Tell us your hotel in Cusco. Pickup for the high-mountain trips is from your hotel, for Humantay at 4:30 to 5:00 am.
- Send your date and the number of travelers. The Humantay tour runs for groups of 2 to 20; if you are traveling alone, ask us what we can arrange.
- Mention students. If anyone has a valid student ID, say so in your inquiry.
- Reserve extras in advance. Horses for the climb, ATVs on the way to Humantay, a private guide or a higher-category hotel are available on request.
- Carry cash in soles. The Humantay Lake entrance fee is not included and is paid in Mollepata on the morning of the tour.
- Leave a buffer day. Book high-altitude trips after your first one or two days in Cusco and not on the day before a long journey.

It depends on what you like. Humantay Lake is the best short hike, with a turquoise glacial lake at 4,200 m (13,780 ft). Rainbow Mountain is higher (5,200 m) and harder. The Sacred Valley is the easiest, with Inca sites, villages and little walking.

How many days should I acclimatize before a day trip?

High-mountain trips start very early: for Humantay Lake, pickup from your hotel is at 4:30 to 5:00 am, and you are back in Cusco in the evening.
What should I bring on a day trip from Cusco?
Warm layers, a rain jacket, sunscreen, a hat, water, snacks and some cash in soles for entrance fees and extras. Good walking shoes are a must for Humantay and Rainbow Mountain.
Can I book Rainbow Mountain or the Sacred Valley as a single day trip?

Is the Humantay Lake entrance fee included?
No. You pay it yourself in Mollepata on the morning of the tour, so carry cash in Peruvian soles.
Can I do Humantay Lake and Rainbow Mountain on back-to-back days?
Some travelers do, but it is a lot of early starts and altitude in a row. Our Peru 9 Days package puts Humantay on Day 5 and Rainbow Mountain on Day 8, with the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu in between, which is easier on the body.
Can I add horses or a private guide?
Yes. Horses for the climb and a private guide are available on request for the Humantay tour. Mention them in your inquiry so we can arrange them before the day.
