How to prepare
Watch out for altitude sickness
ImportantIn Cusco and other high-altitude places it is common to feel headaches, dizziness and shortness of breath. To prevent it, take things slowly for the first few days, drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol and heavy meals, and consider medication if needed. If you have severe symptoms, seek medical attention immediately. Day 3 of the programme is an acclimatisation day for exactly this reason.
Bring your documents
ImportantYou need a passport valid for at least 6 months on the day you enter Peru. Citizens of Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay and Uruguay only need their national ID card. Tourists may stay in Peru for up to 183 days. If you are a student under 25, bring a valid student card: it gives you discounts on several entrance fees.
Pack the right clothing
The weather varies by region. For the warmer coast, bring light clothing and sun protection. For the highlands, especially at Cusco's altitude, bring warm clothes for the cold nights and extra layers for the temperature swings. Do not forget comfortable walking shoes.
Stay safe throughout your trip
WarningPeru has high-quality tourism infrastructure: reliable hotels, restaurants and transport. We recommend staying near the historic centre of each city, the best-monitored area, with security cameras and regular police patrols. Book tourism services only through authorised travel agencies and avoid tempting offers from informal operators.

Frequently asked questions
Are the Lima – Cusco flights included?
Yes. The programme includes the Lima–Cusco flight ticket on Day 3 and the Cusco–Lima ticket on Day 7. International flights in and out of Peru are not included.
How physically demanding is this trip?
Most of it is easy or moderate. The hardest day is Day 6: a 90-minute hike up to Rainbow Mountain at 5,200 m, starting at 4:30 in the morning. Days 1, 2, 3 and 7 are easy.
What is the highest altitude on the programme?
5,200 m (17,060 ft), at Rainbow Mountain on Day 6. Cusco sits at 3,399 m, and Machu Picchu, at 2,430 m, is lower than most travellers expect.
Why are there no excursions on Day 3?
It is an acclimatisation day on purpose. You arrive in Cusco from Lima, which is at sea level, and the body needs around 24 hours before going higher. Skipping that rest is the most common cause of altitude sickness.
What document do I need to travel?
A passport valid for at least 6 months. Citizens of Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay and Uruguay only need their national ID card. Tourists may stay for up to 183 days.
