Book 4 to 6 months ahead for travel from May to September. Permits are limited to 500 people per day, including guides and porters (about 200 are for trekkers), and they sell out first in the dry season.
Our Classic Inca Trail 4 days costs US$810 per person, including the official permit, the Machu Picchu ticket, a bilingual guide, porters, camping meals and the train back.
The Inca Trail closes every February for maintenance. Machu Picchu stays open, so you can still visit it by train or on an alternative trek.
It is a challenging trek. The highest point is Dead Woman's Pass at 4,215 m (13,828 ft), so spend two or three days in Cusco to acclimatise first. The minimum age is 8.
Take the Salkantay Trek (from US$620) or the Choquequirao Trek (from US$360). Salkantay needs no permit, can be booked at shorter notice and also ends at Machu Picchu.
