Tour Details

Salkantay Pass: The Roof of the Salkantay Trek

It is the highest point of the entire route and the most impressive physical challenge of the trip. It is reached during the second day, after climbing a challenging trail from Soraypampa. Located at 4,600 masl, this pass offers a striking closeness to the towering glaciers and the snowy mass of Salkantay. Upon reaching the summit, the effort is rewarded by an overwhelming mountain landscape before beginning the long descent towards the dense high jungle.

Humantay Lake: The Turquoise Jewel of the Andes

Situated in the high mountains, this impressive lake with turquoise waters rises at the foot of the imposing Humantay snow-capped mountain. It is visited during the afternoon of the first day, after having lunch in Soraypampa. Its unique coloration is the product of minerals from the surrounding glaciers, making it one of the most photographed and visited natural landscapes of the region before staying overnight at the Sky Camps.

Llactapata: The Hidden Viewpoint of Machu Picchu

Located along the route on the third day after leaving Chaullay, this Inca archaeological site offers a completely different and privileged perspective. From its terraces and ancestral structures, hikers manage to spot for the first time and from an unconventional angle the citadel of Machu Picchu on the other side of the valley, before continuing the journey towards Aguas Calientes.

Exclusive Accommodations (Sky Camp & Andean Huts)

One of the most distinctive features of the Salkantay Trek operated by ViajaXmundo is the comfort during the nights on the high mountain route. In Soraypampa, guests rest in modern geodesic domes called Sky Camp designed to observe the starry Andean sky, while in Chaullay they stay overnight in cozy Andean cabins or Andean Huts, combining adventure with high-category rest.

In the morning, you will begin your journey from the imperial city of Cusco toward the starting point of the trek, passing through picturesque Andean villages until reaching Soraypampa, where you will enjoy a delicious lunch. In the afternoon, the adventure continues with the ascent toward the slopes of the imposing snow-capped peak to discover the stunning Humantay Lake, famous for its fascinating turquoise waters resulting from glacial meltwater. At the end of the trek, you will spend the night at an exclusive Sky Camp in Soraypampa, designed for resting under a magnificent high-altitude starry sky.

Max altitude: 3900 m Meals: Lunch, Dinner Accommodation: Sky Camp

On this day, you will climb a challenging high mountain trail to reach the iconic Salkantay Pass, the peak point of the route situated at a high altitude, ideal for contemplating the majesty of the towering Salkantay mountain and the surrounding frozen landscapes. After overcoming this physical challenge, you will begin a long descent that will lead you to leave the Andean puna behind to gradually enter the lush vegetation of the cloud forest and jungle brow. Finally, you will spend the night in our exclusive Andean Huts located in the Chaullay area.

Max altitude: 6271 m Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner Accommodation: Camp

In the morning, you will hike through beautiful tropical valleys surrounded by local flora and fauna until reaching the Inca archaeological site of Llactapata, a strategic viewpoint where you will appreciate the citadel of Machu Picchu for the first time and from a unique perspective. You will continue the journey enjoying the change in subtropical scenery before heading toward the town of Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu Pueblo), where you can rest peacefully in a comfortable hotel to prepare for the grand finale of the trip.

Acclimatization

Important

Cusco is located at 3,399 meters above level sea (11,152 feet), so it's recommended that you spend at least one or two days in the city before starting the trek. The Salkantay Trek reaches its highest point at the Salkantay Pass (4,600 m), so proper acclimatization will allow you to enjoy the trek more fully and reduce symptoms of altitude sickness (soroche).

Required Documents

Required

It is important to carry your original passport or valid ID at all times during the trip, as permits are personal and non-transferable and are checked at control points along the trail, at the train station, and at Machu Picchu. Students wishing to receive discounts must present a valid student ID at the time of booking and during the tour.

Money and Payments

Warning

We recommend bringing cash in Peruvian soles for personal expenses, snacks, or additional services during the trek. In the city of Cusco there are ATMs and establishments that accept cards, but along the trail and in remote areas cash is the only accepted payment method.

Best Time to Travel

Tip

Cusco has two main seasons: high season (May to November) with clear skies but colder nights, and low season (December to April) with fewer crowds but more rain. Our recommendation: April and May, when the weather is pleasant and the landscape is lush and green.

Safety on the Trek

Important

It's important to follow your guide's instructions and stick to the scheduled times each day, since permits and campsite access are strictly regulated. Always keep your belongings secure and walk only on the marked trail.

Small Travel Backpack

Perfect for carrying personal items, water, documents, and daily essentials during the trek. Maximum 40 liters, since you'll carry it yourself the entire way.

Comfortable, Lightweight Clothing

We recommend wearing comfortable, quick-drying clothing that allows you to move easily during long walking days and changing terrain.

Waterproof Jacket or Windbreaker

Useful for protecting yourself from sudden changes in weather, since the trek runs almost year-round, rain or shine, especially at higher altitudes like the Salkantay Pass.

Comfortable Trekking Shoes

Sturdy, already broken-in hiking shoes that provide comfort and stability when walking on uneven terrain across four days.

Sunscreen

Essential for protecting your skin from the sun's rays, especially at high-altitude points like the Salkantay Pass.

Cap or Hat

Recommended for sun protection during the day and warmth during cold nights at camp.

Reusable Water Bottle

Helps you stay hydrated throughout the trek and reduces plastic waste along the trail.
